چکیده

Compensation of the poleward eddy heat transport by the heat transport of an eddy-induced mean meridional overturning cell is a common feature in many eddyresolving ocean models. It has been ,argued that this is the result of the weak thermal driving of the ocean. As the actual air/sea coupling is scale dependent, it might be questioned whether the approximation of weak thermal driving is relevant for the oceanic eddy field. In this paper the role of diabatic forcing in modifying eddy-mean flow interaction is investigated. Emphasis has been placed on the sensitivity of the eddy-induced change in heat transport to the sea surface thermal boundary condition. Experiments have been performed with a multilayer isopycnic primitive equation model of an idealized North Atlantic subtropical and subpolar gyre. For different values of the air/sea coupling, solutions with and without transient eddies have been compared. The air/sea coupling mostly affects the upper ocean thermal and velocity fields. A decrease of the coupling timescale pushes the separation point of the midlatitude jet further northward and induces a tight recirculation southwest of the separated jet. These effects are enhanced by the eddies. In the present model there is compensation of the eddy heat transport for sea surface temperature (SST) relaxation times longer than 150 days; a breakdown of the compensation occurs for SST relaxation times shorter than 50 days (the average upper layer depth is 200 m). In between is a transition regime. For strong thermal driving the eddy-induced change in total heat transport is of the same order as the eddy heat transport.

The Sensitivity of an Intermediate Model of the Midlatitude Troposphere’s Equilibrium to Changes in Radiative Forcing*

The sensitivity of the equilibrated state of a dry high-resolution quasigeostrophic b-plane channel model, coupled to both a simplified model of the atmospheric boundary layer and an interactive static stability, to changes in forcings is investigated. An earlier study with the same model found that with standard parameter values, the potential vorticity in the center of the channel just above ...

An Eddifying Parsons Model

The time-mean effects of eddies are studied in a model based on the Parsons–Veronis–Huang–Flierl models of the wind-driven gyre. Much of the analysis used for the steady solutions carries over if the model is cast in terms of the thickness-weighted mean velocity, because then mass transport is nondivergent in the absence of diabatic forcing. The model exemplifies the use of residual mean theory...

The Empirical Forcing Function as a tool for the diagnosis of large-scale atmospheric anomalies

The time-mean quasi-geostrophic potential vorticity equation of the atmospheric flow on isobaric surfaces can explicitly include an atmospheric (internal) forcing term of the stationary-eddy flow. In fact, neglecting some nonlinear terms in this equation, this forcing can be mathematically expressed as a single function, called Empirical Forcing Function (EFF), which is equal to the material de...

An Exploration of the Role of Transient Eddies in Determining the Transport of a Zonally Reentrant Current

The meridional Ekman transport in a zonally reentrant channel may be balanced by diabatic circulations, standing eddies associated with topography, or by Lagrangian mean eddy mass fluxes. A simple model is used to explore the interaction between these mechanisms. A key assumption of this study is that diabatic forcing in the poleward edge of the channel acts to create lighter fluid, as is the c...

Sensitivity of an Ocean General Circulation Model to a Parameterization of Near-Surface Eddy Fluxes

A simplified version of the near-boundary eddy flux parameterization developed recently by Ferrari et al. has been implemented in the NCAR Community Climate System Model (CCSM3) ocean component for the surface boundary only. This scheme includes the effects of diabatic mesoscale fluxes within the surface layer. The experiments with the new parameterization show significant improvements compared...
